About Radio Patrin

The old traditional system of communication among Roma communities was called “patrin” (leaf). Traveling Roma families used to combine things from their environment such as leaves, feathers, sticks etc. into unique forms, passing on the information to other Roma that will pas the same road. Radio Patrin is a new modern mean of communication among Roma, and between Roma and non-Roma.

Patrins core project is development of the future Pan-European Roma Radio and Television. Patrin is part of Nevipe – a non-profit foundation from the Netherlands. It started as a bilingual Romani-English periodical “Patrin” published and distributed over Europe, Americas and Australia 1991-1996. With offices in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Presov, Slovakia, Nevipe organised community actions, education projects & surveys on Roma situation. In 1992 Patrin started as radio program.

Since 2009 Patrin is hosted by Amsterdam SALTO as independent Romani Radio with Romani-English and programs in other languages. Radio Patrin cover local, regional and international issues by dividing its program in two parts: a general program covering the European international audience, and program tailored for specific countries and regions prepared by local Romani journalists and news agencies for regional audience.

From April 2013 Radio Patrin is member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union-Eurovison) and EBU Roma Task Force Group. Radio Patrin is active in Romani media scene participating and co-organising a number of the media events, conferences, and meetings related to the developments of the Romani media, education of Roma journalists and preservation of Romani culture. As original advocate for Roma communities, Radio Patrin has established a communication with its Romani and non-Romani audiences, considerable support from local, regional and European opinion formers, and long-term cooperation with international activists and institutions (OSCE, CoE, EU, US Congress, Romani/non-Romani NGOs from Europe, Russia, USA, Latin America, Australia).
